VII a. Flavian Dynasty - ALRItkwRom101Flavians.html
Flavians

A three-emperor dynasty [N.B.: Oficially not "emperors" -- this was still a principate] --

Vespasian (69-79 AD), Titus (79-81), Domitian (81-96)

Vespasian 69 - 79 AD Vespasian gets power after post-Nero Civil Wars

Numerous contenders in and around Rome

Vespasian's advantage was not coming to Rome

He stayed in Egypt and used surrogates

Cost him his Brother's life

Legions from Germany fought his battles

He didn't show up in Rome until the dust settled

Major events

Restoration of order in Rome

Victories in wars in the Middle East

Colosseum

Oldest son, Titus, left in charge of Middle East cleanup

By end of Vespasian rule, Titus was co-ruler and war hero

Easy succession assured

Titus 79 - 81 AD

Short reign ended in natural death

Greatest accomplishments all before official reign Very popular war hero -- he quashed Jewish Revolt

The great joint Triumph before Veaspasian's death

http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ancient/josephus-warc.html

Some pre-reign qualms -- Might he be the next Nero?

Berenice, daughter of Herod Agrippa

Heavy-handedness as Praetorian Prefect

Tales of debauchery -- apparently true

But he got good press after accession

Free spending of Middle East loot Public baths on Domus Aurea site

Died after 26 months in office Domitian accused of foul play, but no real evidence

Camelot? Hero worship after short reign with untimely end?

Benefitted from bad reputation of younger brother, Domitian

Domitian 81 - 96 AD Bad pre-rule reputation Abused power while Vespasian and Titus in Middle-East

Playboy younger brother image

Not good with people -- not close to Titus, no rapport with Senate

After accession, a micromanager, specially on economic matters

So some alienation of he bureaucracy

Currency revaluation of 81 AD partial failure

Devalued again in 85

But still better than Vespasian/Titus standard

Taxes raised and confiscations increased

Tried to limit viticulture to increase grain production -- edict ignored

But some successes Erected/Restored/Completed at least 50 major structures including Restoration of Capitoline Jupiter Temple

Expanding Palatine Palace

Stadium (Piazza Navona)

Maintained currency at 85 AD standard and left a treasury surplus

False military credentials -- no real victories of his own

Rise of the imperial Court as a power center made a lot of enemies

Reliance on "amici" infuriated Senate

When they objected Domitian reacted violently

Eleven Consular Rank Senators executedd, others exiled

Others had been worse, notably Claudius, but Domitian was openly contemptuous of senatorial critics.

Assassination plots multiplied --- one succeeded Sept 18th, 96 AD -- Domitian killed and immediately replaced by Nerva

Ironically, Nerva was one of Domitian's "Amici"
